‘Of Mice and Men’ is a novel written by John Steinbeck in 1937, based on Steinbeck’s personal experiences relating on life on the ranches. The characters, George and Lennie, are some of the characters that have Steinbeck’s aspects of his life seeing as they are the main characters of the novel. In the novel Steinbeck highlights the social conflicts of that time period, such as the climatic changes cause by drought and the financial collapse of 1929, which had increase unemployment and poverty throughout the United States of America. One of the most important aspects that is attached with most of the characters of the novel is loneliness. Steinbeck has purposely named the town Soledad because in Spanish Soledad means â€Å"loneliness† and it shows the reader how lonely the town is. Loneliness motivates characters to seek an alternate way of life. The characters that start off together end up being separated up in the end like George and Lennie, Candy and his dog and Curley and his wife. Everyone on the ranch is lonely; this is because all the men in the bunkhouse are single. An example of this is when George says â€Å"They got no family†. This means that they are like orphans because they do not have a family and no one to care for them. The men that live in the bunkhouse also have nothing to look forward to, except work for the rest of their lives. Even though George has Lennie with him, he is still feels lonely and an example of this is that in the story they show Lennie play the game solitaire, which is only played by one person and is not a team game which means that there is no social interaction. It is also because George has all the responsibility and to take care of Lennie because Lennie is not responsible. This makes the other characters find it strange that they travel around together because most of the ranch hands tend to travel around alone. This can be seen when Slim is surprised at the closeness of their relationship, â€Å"aint many guys travel around together.† This shows that having company is unusual and being lonely is now seen as normal. Candy is also very lonely because during the novella he loses his dog and he also loses his dream. His life is the total opposite of his name because the name ‘Candy’ gives us an image of sweet things but the character Candy is the total opposite. His dog provides him company and has been his life for a long time. This can be seen when he says, â€Å"I had him ever since he was a pup,† which shows that the dog was someone he was able to care for which provided him with a family. The killing of Candy’s dog is a reflection of attitudes of life on the ranch because the characters do not have any friends or family themselves, they fail to understand human attachments and relationships. This can be seen when Carlson says, â€Å"Why’nt you shoot him Candy?† It shows that Carlson isn’t very sympathetic and he can’t understand how strong a bond is between Candy and his dog. It also mirrors the attitude towards Candy himself as on the ran ch when you fail to be useful people just get rid of you. Another character who is lonely is Crooks. He is lonely because he is isolated due to the colour of his skin, he is the only black man in the book and at that time, America was a very racist place and Crooks is persecuted. He is only referred to as â€Å"nigger†, â€Å"stable buck† or â€Å"crooks† he is never referred to by his actual name which suggests that no one is bothered to get to know him. His loneliness is perhaps the worst in the novella as he lives alone away from everybody else. This can be seen where it says ‘he had his bunk in the harness’, this shows that he is more likely to be lonely as he is isolated from the other ranch hands purely based on the colour of his skin. This can be seen in the quote that says ‘ A guy goes nuts if he ain’t got nobody’ , this suggests that he may have literally gone insane with loneliness. However, it is clear that he craves companionship and this can be seen when Lennie comes into his living quarters and he does not stop talking, clearly showing that he yearns for company as he is terribly lonely. It is ironic because he ahs a copy of the California Code in his room which is meant to protect the rights of black people in America, but it is very clear that this is in fact a symbol and not a reality for men like Crooks, who is unable to socialise or be accepted as a ranch hand due to the colour of his skin. Curley was aggressive man and is referred to fighting. This is because he looks like a boxer and Candy say that he is â€Å"handy†, which means that he fights well. Whit also says that he was in the finals for the â€Å"Golden Glove† which is a boxing competition and it shows us that he likes fighting. In relationships, no one likes Curley and he does not get any respect from anyone. This shows us that he is also lonely because even though he is married, his wife is not happy with him as she thinks she has missed many opportunities by living with Curley and the lonely men. The only time Curley is shown with his wife is when she is dead. Curley’s wife wants to have recognition, attention, her own identity and her own life. Steinbeck has not given her a name on purpose to show how she has none of these things. She does not have her own identity because she is seen as just someone’s wife and without Curley, she would be nothing. She is very lonely because no one seems to love her because Curley is not very affectionate. She is continually looking for companionship because she says â€Å"Think I don’t like to talk to somebody ever’ once in a while?† This shows that she too is lonely and possibly even more isolated as the other ranch hands do not want to talk to her for fear of upsetting Curley and it clearly shows that Curley does not give her the attention she craves and desires. She tries to desperately get the attention of the other ranch hands by dressing up when she goes to see them. She is described as having ‘red’ nails and lipstick, the colour ‘red’ suggests love and danger, which means that she automatically repels people that she needs for company. This shows she is incredibly desperate and sad, and she is going to the barn looking for cheap thrills and an ego boost. In conclusion, Steinbeck has presented the theme of loneliness successfully in various ways. He has explained how the life on ranches can be very lonely even if you are still around people. He has done this by making George tell Lennie how the life of a ranch-hand is among the loneliest of lives and by making some of the characters confess their deep loneliness to Lennie and George which shows how desperate they are by admitting to complete strangers.

Religion is very similar in Mesopotamia and Egypt by both being polytheistic and the fact that the king/Pharaoh was supposively the closest to god in the valley, the king/Pharaoh would have many sacrifices when something bad happened. They also had animism and used carvings, drawings, and statues to show their beliefs towards the gods. And though their gods were not the same the views of the afterlife and beliefs were very similar. The main similarities between the two valleys religion was they’re both polytheistic and that their beliefs were very similar towards the gods and the afterlife. In conclusion the two main differences were social and political views when it came to gender equality, classes (rank), and the way the gods treated the people. Algernon is a pompous man of seemingly strong, albeit unconventional, convictions. Wilde uses him for the sole purpose of mocking the sanctimonious institution of marriage. In the beginning of the play, Algernon considers Jack's intent to propose to Gwendolen to be "business," not "pleasure" (30). Yet eventually Algernon also resolves to propose to Cicely, discrediting his own established belief: "I really don't see anything romantic in proposing. It is very romantic to be in love. But there is nothing romantic about a definite proposal. Why, one may be accepted. One usually is, I believe. Then the excitement is all over. The very essence of romance is un... ...man to find out suddenly that all his life he has been speaking nothing but the truth" (108). Though Algernon, by the play's close, does not realize this, it is the inevitable that he will eventually realize that the truth is no longer with him. Bavarian Motor Works (BMW) group, recently introduced its iconic Mini brand in India with four models, price ranging between Rs 24.9 lakh to Rs 31.99 lakh.[1] BMW had contemplated launching the Mini brand in India back in 2009 too, but the move was shelved on account of weak market conditions, particularly due to global economic meltdown. The launch of the compact car BMW mini has been on the line of similar introductions in Indian automobile market by auto majors like Fiat and Volkswagen. Back in 2008, Fiat launched Fiat 500 Cinquecento model in India. It was priced at around Rs 14.82 lakh.[2] The car sold only 60 units and was subsequently re-launched in 2010. The sales number of Fiat 500 seems pale in comparison to the sales of Volkswagen Beetle, which was launched in India in November 2009 and had sold 300 units by July 2010[1], surpassing the original sales targets. However, the sales figures, of both these premium small cars are overshadowed massively by sales of other mass produced small cars in India, which are usually sold in Rs 3-6 lakh price range. Then why has a leading automobile maker like BMW launched a compact car like Mini in the Indian market, which cost nearly 5 to 8 times more than a regular small car in India, and then sell only by tens or hundreds and not by masses? This study aims at bringing to the light the strategies and reasons behind this move by the auto giant and what BMW aims to achieve through it. Let us first start by discussing the marketing mix techniques BMW has used to launch the Mini brand in India : Product : One of the most important component of any marketing mix is the product the company wishes to sell in the market. BMW has been strongly associated as a premium quality auto brand the world over. Its slogan â€Å"The Ultimate Driving Machine† further bolsters the fact that the company is engaged in making top quality cars, demanded by customers who prioritise the quality of the machine, driving pleasure and comfort over price. Therefore, the company targets the niche segment of buyers who demand top of the line quality product. Taking note of the increasing demand for premium cars in the Indian market the company has been adding several brands of cars, even since it set foot in the country, to the portfolio of the products it offers here. Mini was originally launched by British Motor Corporation in 1959.[3] Ever since the car was first introduced to the world, the Mini brand has carved a niche for itself, and created a sort of cult following and sentimental value towards the brand the world over. According to a Wall Street Journal Report dated January 5th 2012, Sales of Mini brand rose 20% in 2011 from the 234,000 units it sold in 2010, helped by robust demand across the U.S., U.K and China, irrespective of weak economic conditions.[4] Though the launch of BMW Mini was delayed in India (as originally planned to launch in 2009), according to Kay Segler, Senior Vice President, Mini Brand Management and Business Coordination, â€Å"Indian market is now ready for a brand like Mini as the country has become a part of the global community when it comes to lifestyle trends.† as told to PTI.[5] He further said, â€Å"More Indians are travelling and living abroad, they have network overseas and are more aware of trends ,† Segler said.[5] BMW’s market observation as worded by Segler shows that there is a market for Mini in India, for those who wish to own an iconic car, which is synonymous to fashion and style the world over. Price : BMW Mini is priced between Rs 24.9 lakh to Rs 31.99 lakh in India. The car is imported as a completely built unit, unlike other BMW variants like 3 series, 5 series, X1 and X3 which are assembled domestically, therefore carrying a high component of tax. However prices have been kept in comparison to the offerings of other competing brands like Volkswagen Beetle and Fiat 500 which fall in the same category as much as possible. Since BMW is a luxury car maker, the prices of the cars in its stable are very high. Mini is no exception. The prices are not such to justify the sale of the car to the masses but rather to high income rich influential Indian buyers who want to purchase the product majorly because of its iconic status and sentimental value attached to the brand over the decades, or simply as a status symbol. Placement : BMW sells its cars in India through 17 dealerships across 13 cities.[7] However, BMW Mini is to be sold through exclusive showrooms. Mini first started selling here at Infinity Cars, Mumbai on Linking Road. The dealership received 100 booking within a week. Later showroom in Delhi was opened in June and has sold 50 units till now[8]. BMW subsequently plans to open exclusive showrooms for Mini in Hyderabad, Chandigarh and Bangalore. The company has strategically chosen the financial capital (Mumbai) and political capital (Delhi) of India for its initial sales of Mini. High income groups are attuned and aware of the international trends and style standards. To promote a product that will appeal to niche class of buyers, BMW has adopted an aggressive marketing technique to sell the Mini brand in India. Supporting this, Dr. Andreas Schaaf, President, BMW Group India, â€Å"We are focused on a strong, surprising, daring and unexpected marketing strategy for the Indian market.†[9] Dummy models of the cars in its portfolio were placed on a lake close to New Delhi and on the rooftops of skyscrapers in order to enhance the presence of Mini brand in India.[9] This strategy was also part of its international ‘daring’ marketing strategy, though domestically it was a new technique. To further promote the Mini brand, the company plans to further collaborate with several marketing agencies. The emphasis is put on the unique ideas the car can be promoted with. According to Bejamin Nagel, Head of Mini India, the focus is on Guerilla and experimental marketing, as the Mini is not a mass product, but rather a premium car. Therefore, the company has opted not to promote it through mass media. It is therefore safe to say that for promoting the Mini brand in India, BMW is focusing on BTL (below the line) advertisement methods to target specific group of niche buyers, instead of ATL (above the line) methods of mass advertisement. Indian Automobile and the Mini The Indian automobile market which we know of today, has developed from its miniscule form since the early 1950s to the giant and growing industry it is today. Before the reforms to liberalise the economy in the early 1990s, the automobile sector was highly insulated from foreign investments. Due to very high tariffs on imports and other measures, the participation of foreign companies was extremely restricted. If we go back a bit further, 1950s saw the arrival of TATA Motors, Bajaj Auto and Mahindra & Mahindra. This lead to a steady increase in vehicle production in India. Jump and Motocross

The engines rev higher with each second of the gate drop creeping closer, the vibrations of the motorcycle underneath you making you even more nervous, the smell of exhaust almost suffocating you inside your helmet, and in a split second the gate has dropped and 40 riders all funnel into the first turn. While some say it is just a simple race others see it as a lifestyle, a way to get off the edge, a high risk to fill their need for a rush, or just a quick shot of adrenaline. This is Motocross. The sport of Motocross is mostly looked upon as a death wish although it is very dangerous I think that the excitement and thrill is definitely worth the risk. It all started for me when I was five, my dad told me when I could ride my bike without training wheels he would get me a dirt bike. Soon enough I was waking up on Christmas morning to a motocross bike. After that it was like throwing a match into a bucket of gasoline. All I thought about was riding my dirt bike. It soon became much more than a sport to me. We would travel up and down the whole entire east coast to race with the fastest kids so I could get faster. We were almost never home on the weekends, we were either at a race or at a track putting in practice to hopefully one day fulfill the dream of becoming a professional. Although that dream is still very far and has slowly drawn to back of my mind I still want to be a professional more than anything else. My love for the sport has steadily grown stronger with every lap I have put in. It is something about the jitters you get right when you go to try a new a jump not knowing if you have enough power to make it or have too much and over jump it. That feeling you get right when the gate is about to drop is a sensation undescribeable by words. When the motors rev high and the seat rattles it is almost like a lullaby to put you into a mood to be serious, yet let all of your problems slip away, I honestly cannot describe why I love Motocross so much it is just an addiction that has grown on me. Once the gate is on the ground and all forty of the riders shoot into the first turn you have to be completely concentrated. After you break past the first turn it is a free for all to see who is the fastest. It is pure competition to the finish line and that’s why I love it. Motocross consists of many different obstacles corners, jumps, whoops, mud, and dust. Every corner is different, some have deep ruts and others are flat, no matter how tight or wide the corner is you have to go through it smooth and quick because 99% of the race is won in the corners. Jumps are probably the scariest part of the sport but once you get over the fear of it jumping becomes very second natured. When jumping jumps it is all about speed and body positioning, squeeze the bike with your legs and get over the front of the bike with your elbows up, then hold the throttle and hope for the best. Mud and dust all depend on whether it is hot or rainy or whether the track crew watered the track. Mud is very tricky to ride in because if you stop then it is very hard to get going again so you have to stay on the gas in the mud. When the track is dry and dusty you have to be easy on the throttle because if you give it to much throttle you will slide out. See Motocross is a very tricky sport but it something you adapt to and practice at and eventually you get better and better. When it really comes down to it Motocross has not only been a sport to me but it has been a life lesson to teach me self-control, discipline, and hard work. It all started with a simple promise that I would get a dirt bike if I could ride without training wheels. Now it is a lifestyle that I love so much and wouldn’t trade it for anything. Its many different obstacles can be a hard struggle to get through just like some of life’s struggles, but if you work hard and put your heart in it, it will be worth it in the end. Unlike other means of computer operating equipment such as clicker or mouse, the smart hand product offers several instructions that are customized in a more convenient manner. In summary, it can be said that smart hand product takes a total control of the university lecturer class in his or her palm. The company’s mission statement is to enable users to control computer and give customized instructions in the palm of the hand. SmartHand LCC will strive to accomplish the mission by focusing on four main objectives: provide users better experience in manipulating virtual space, improving convenience of use, developing new software features based on customization, and changing the way of teaching in a smart classroom. The product idea is based on designs from students from School of Information Studies and further improved by the management team at SmartHand LLC. The inventors designed the intelligence glove in order to develop a technology to manipulate objects in a virtual space.
